Chapter Eight

~Erin~

I changed into my gear and scurried to the volleyball court, ready for practice. I thought about what Devon said about training with him after the fall sports season was over. The thought made me smile.

I rotated as the team practiced sets and spikes. I wasn’t as tall as some of the other girls at five feet six inches, but I was a strong setter and outside hitter. Other girls, like Taylor, were tall and used for blocking and devastating spikes. Laura had moved but there was always a girl interested in Devon. And they were beautiful, tall, and with space alien long legs. I shook my head and brushed the stray hair out of my face as if to release the thought. I set the ball to Taylor for a powerful spike down the left line.

“You can do that all day. C’mon defense! Cover the line!” Karen Thompson coached the team for three years. We had reached the play-offs last year but never a championship. I thought some members of the team had a remote chance of a scholarship, including me, but only if the team won a major title. Come back to reality, Erin. A scholarship would be a godsend, I thought, but not likely. My mom simply did not have the money for four years of college.

I passed the ball to Gail, a strong setter, who set the ball to Taylor. Pow! She had drilled another spike down the left line. Taylor would probably be the only one considered for anything close to a scholarship. She was a key player in offense and defense. And she was tall, which seemed to be half the battle in volleyball and basketball. I sat on the bench in the locker, gathering up my volleyball gear.

“So I hear you and Devon are together.” Oh, my God. It’s Taylor. Don’t tell me she’s interested in him now, too. I was hoping she was just curious. “We’ve been going out, nothing serious.” I shrugged

“That’s not what I heard.” Taylor flopped her cherry red hair back into a ponytail. She was gorgeous, too. “Good for you, Erin,” she said with a wink. “Better not let him go.”

“Thanks for the well wishes, Taylor. Nice playing today.” More like a veiled threat, I thought. I reached for my bag and flung it over my back.

I was meeting Kathy for lunch at our favorite diner. I was already seated when Kathy walked in, glanced my way, and waved at me. I returned the wave and Kathy’s mouth moved into a wicked smile as she approached me.

“Oh, c’mon, how does everyone know about this already?” I frowned at her.

“This is high school, sweetheart. Nothing is secret.” Kathy sat down across from me.

“What, are we on YouTube or something?” I scowled.

“You guys don’t act like friends —let’s just put it that way. You walk a little too close and know each other a bit too well.” Kathy trailed off into a high tone to emphasize her point.

“So what?” I said with a grimace.
